Transcending Boundaries with Capt. Sophie Hollingsworth

NEXT: Network for Future Leaders

Join AmCham for a breakfast of adventure and inspiration with former ballerina turned award winning explorer Capt. Sophie Hollingsworth.

As a health security specialist, Capt. Sophie uses her passion for exploration to help forage a more sustainable future with some of the most remote communities on the planet - her work has been featured by National Geographic and the United Nations.

In addition to practical changemaking lessons applicable from the backcountry to the boardroom, Capt. Sophie will recount her amusing and sometimes poignant tales of transitioning from a ballerina to an explorer and subsequent adventures and misadventures ranging from the conflict riddled streets of Managua to the remote mountains of Madagascar.

Throughout the breakfast, Capt. Sophie hopes to challenge our assumptions and inspire a new generation of explorers - firmly believing the more people that get out of their comfort zone to explore the unknown, whether that means new responsibilities at work or trekking across Chad, the better the world will be.

About Capt. Sophie Hollingsworth

Sophie is the current New Explorer of the year for the USA and a UN Youth Delegate. Sophie combines an interest in two of the most significant topics of our time: environmental change and health. As the Founder of AquaAid International, Sophie works with some of Central America and Sub-Saharan Africa’s most remote villages establishing sustainable sources of clean drinking water.

Sophie has sailed across the Pacific Ocean and holds a 200-ton captain’s license. At the time of certification, she was the youngest female to ever obtain a 200-ton MCA Yachtmaster Captain’s License. Her passion for adventure and discovering indigenous ways of life has led her undertake descents of uncharted rivers in Madagascar, desert transect treks in Namibia, and ethnographic research in the Republic of Vanuatu - all of which she chronicles on The Sofía Log. Sophie’s work has been featured by National Geographic and the United Nations.

The NEXT: Network for Future Leaders Series of events has been developed to give our younger members another forum to develop their own contacts and to understand how to utilise the commercial benefits gained from networking. Our mission is to connect and develop young professionals and business people who share an interest in the commercial and cultural relationship between Australia and the United States, by facilitating networking, education and personal development opportunities.

There will be plenty of time to network with other industry professionals over coffee and nibbles. This before-work networking event is designed to provide attendees with an opportunity to make new contacts and converse with like-minded young professionals.

Up to 3 attendees per company is suggested, allowing for a diverse range of industry representatives. Please forward this invitation on to your colleagues, clients and stakeholders who will benefit from participation in this unique event.
