Join AmCham in a discussion on how industry and governments can leverage Australia’s advantages for industrial growth featuring Karen Dobson, President and Managing Director Dow Australia and New Zealand.
Drawing on experiences of recent years, Karen will explore the opportunity to build on the existing domestic manufacturing sector and the opportunity to expand this for the future. Touching familiar topics, such as: government regulation, workforce skills, research and development links, energy policy and global value chains Karen will cover both the missed and potential opportunities for business and government to develop industry and an advanced manufacturing sector.
Demand for Australian resources is likely to continue with increasing demand for commodity and rare minerals, but is that the limit of Australia’s value proposition or can more strategic policy and investment build on Australia’s manufacturing foundations.
Creating the value add industries in mineral applications, resources and petrochemicals shouldn’t be overlooked.

 About the Speakers
Karen Dobson is President and Managing Director of Dow Australia and New Zealand. In this role, she is responsible for Dow’s business and operations, and advancing the company’s strategy and reputation across Australia and New Zealand. Karen is based in Dow’s ANZ headquarters in Melbourne, Australia.
Karen joined Dow in 1987 as an engineer at the Altona, Australia manufacturing facility. In 1992, she relocated to Hong Kong as Asia Pacific Technical Leader for Dow Water & Process Solutions, working with Dow’s world-leading technologies for industrial and municipal water purification. She was named Asia Pacific Marketing Manager for W&PS in 1995 and Asia Pacific Commercial Director in 1998, relocating to Sydney. In 2002, she relocated to Minneapolis, USA as Global Marketing Director for Dow’s membrane technologies for water and wastewater treatment. In 2007 Karen returned to Shanghai as Corporate Marketing Director for Asia Pacific and added the role of Business Development Director in 2010.
Karen returned to Melbourne in 2014 as Global Business Director for Mining in Dow Oil, Gas & Mining and in 2017 became Global Commercial Director for Dow’s corporate sports sponsorship assets. She was appointed to her current role in January 2019.Karen holds a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering degree from the University of Melbourne, Australia.
