 About the Speakers
 Nick McKenna
President, Australia East
CONOCOPHILLIPS
Nick McKenna is President, Australia East for
ConocoPhillips based in Brisbane.
Nick has 24 years of industry experience and joined
ConocoPhillips in Houston in 2007 as the manager of
Quality and Management Systems within the Project
Development organization. In 2010, he was seconded
to Australia Pacific LNG as the general manager, Project
Office. In February 2013, Nick moved to Calgary,
Canada, where he assumed the role of vice president,
Oil Sands Development, and then was appointed vice
president of Oil Sands Development and Subsurface in
November 2015. Prior to assuming his current role in
2019, he was asset manager, Central Rockies and
Anadarko, USA.
Before joining ConocoPhillips, he worked for McKinsey
& Company in Houston. Nick has also worked for
Technip in Houston, Halliburton Subsea in Singapore
and Brown & Root Energy Services in Australia. At these
firms, he held a number of engineering and supervisory
roles.
Nick earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering
from the University of Western Australia in 1994, a
Master of Science in system design and management in
2004, and a doctorate in engineering systems in 2006,
both postgraduate degrees from the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology.

NERA is working with industry, universities and researchers, entrepreneurs, innovative SMEs, skills initiatives and governments to support the cultural change and new thinking required to overcome barriers to collaboration and innovation, and to ensure Australia’s energy resources sector is staying ahead of the global automation technology transformation.
 Professor Andrew Garnett
Director, The UQ Centre for Natural Gas
UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND (UQ)
Professor Andrew (Alf) Garnett is a former Shell and Schlumberger executive. He currently leads large multi-disciplinary research programs contributing to future energy transitions through natural gas and through carbon abatement at The University of Queensland. He was bought on board by UQ for his deep industry experience, having worked widely on oil and gas developments across the globe for the past 30 years, most notably, those with high greenhouse gas emission footprints.
Andrew heads up UQ's Centre for Natural Gas, a centre formed in 2012 to drive world-class research in Queensland. The Centre is conducting high quality, independent scientific research in the CSG sector to help improve stewardship of the State’s resources. The research spans the areas of petroleum engineering and geoscience, groundwater management and impacts, and community and social performance.
More recently he was also charged by the university to lead research investigating the potential development of large-scale carbon capture and storage in Queensland, a technology which is flagged internationally as one of the key solutions to significantly reduce emissions. The broad-scale technical, environmental, social and economic scoping study will be used to inform public debate and policy makers.
 Seth Hobby LL.B (Hons), Juris Doctorate
Executive Commercial Manager
INCITEC PIVOT LIMITED
Seth was appointed as IPL’s Executive Commercial Officer on 30 January 2018. Seth has fifteen years of international legal and business experience, including working across the IPL Group, both in Asia Pacific and the U.S. Seth has led and been involved with major commercial and strategic projects for IPL and Dyno Nobel in both corporate and commercial capacities. In his previous role as SVP, Nitrogen for Dyno Nobel Americas, he had a key role in the conception, negotiation, construction and commissioning of IPL’s US$850m world scale ammonia plant in Waggaman, Louisiana. Seth is a qualified lawyer and left private practice to join Dyno Nobel as in-house counsel where he led the legal department for several years before undertaking commercial roles. Seth has served as the Chairman of the Institute of Makers of Explosives in the U.S., and for many years as a director on the boards of each of IPL’s North American JV businesses.
