Message from AmCham CEO April Palmerlee

With NSW state elections in March, and a Federal election expected in May, businesses are working overtime to stay abreast of possible changes to the environments in which they operate no matter who wins the election. AmCham aims to support our members in these endeavours through a variety of initiatives. We continue to host ministers and shadow ministers this year, with a recent roundtable with Shadow Minister for Resources & Northern Australia, and Trade & Investment Jason Clare and an upcoming event featuring Energy Minister Angus Taylor on 11 April in Sydney, and other ministers to be determined based on availability pre- and post-election. We will also offer a workshop on the best ways to write effective memos to policymakers. We are also producing a research paper that will articulate AmCham’s suggestions for the next Government to maintain and attract FDI. If you would like to have your voice heard and have not yet been contacted, please reach out .

Following the elections, we will invite committee members to participate in the extremely popular Canberra Doorknocks. And then there is the incomparable in July, which all AmCham members and guests can attend. This is an unparalleled opportunity to meet with senior officials from the Trump Administration, Congress, the Australian Embassy, think tanks, and other institutions to better understand what is happening in Washington and how it affects your business in Australia and around the world. We hope you will join with us to continue to engage with policymakers to work together to create jobs in Australia and the US, and grow the global economy through free and fair trade.

And a few big events that we have seen around the country already this year:

  • This month saw the launch of the AmCham Academy in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide. This new program brings together high-potential talent from AmCham member companies with global leaders to learn about a variety of industries and verticals as well as to develop networks with peers from other sectors. Late registrations may still be available in some states; please see more information .

  • Higher education is an important facet of AmCham’s mission, and we are pleased to count a number of Australia and America’s top universities among our membership. This month, I joined a distinguished panel at the Laureate University leadership summit, discussing how industry can best engage with the tertiary education sector to leverage the Fourth Industrial Revolution to be sure Australia is producing the kinds of employees that companies need now and into the future.

  • AmCham was pleased to highlight the important role fashion and publishing play in the bilateral relationship by hosting visiting Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour in Melbourne.

I participated in , when the group visited Snowy Hydro, Thredbo, Cooma and Lake Crackenback, and am encouraged by the emphasis being placed on the opportunities for growth and development outside the capital city.

Our nation’s economy, and a whole generation, has grown up on the benefits delivered by that brief exploration campaign.
