July 2020 Message from AmCham CEO

July 2020

As COVID restrictions ease in certain states, AmCham has started coming out from “under the doona” where appropriate, and holding small, socially distanced live gatherings this month. Our first in-person AmCham Academy session since March was held in Adelaide, with some attendees and the speaker in person at our offices and the rest online. Today in Sydney we launched our report on the importance of the United States to the Australian economy, Building Prosperity, with the Trade Minister, the US Ambassador, and the AmCham Chairman, as well as a distinguished panel of business leaders. At the same time, we launched our online Business of Wine series. And so it will go for the foreseeable future, with some hybrid events and others online. We have appreciated hearing from our members about their RTW plans and how they are balancing running their businesses and keeping employees and customers safe. Remember to check our website for.

The Building Prosperity report takes a fresh look at the impact of US investment on the Australian economy and uses an exciting new model for calculating its worth. In 2019, Australia’s exports to the United States and the income generated from US investment in Australia generated $131 billion – more than 7% of the Australian GDP. It has been this way for much of the past decade, in fact. But Australians don’t seem to realise just how important American investment is for our country. A recent YouGov poll for USSC found that only 17% of Australians correctly named America as our largest source of foreign investment. More than 70% misidentified China as Australia’s largest investor, despite US investment ($1.82 trillion) dwarfing Chinese investment ($78 billion), leading to hundreds of thousands of jobs for Australians and massive R&D investments.

AmCham will be presenting more reports in the coming months that will be useful to our members. Please get in touch with us if you would like to be involved in our current or future research.

Thank you for your involvement in and support of our work.

Yours sincerely,

April Palmerlee, Chief Executive Officer

1. Favourite movie?

Shawshank Redemption - resilience, friendship, forgiveness and karma

2. Most rewarding part about your job?

Working with really inspiring and smart people. Regardless of discipline (additive manufacturing, urban design or public health), researchers and colleagues are striving to generate new and better ways of doing things, connect, partner, and translate knowledge into real world impact.

3. Something that your social media followers don’t know about you?

Followers may think I only care about animals - particularly greyhound rescues! However I also have a passion for design and renovate houses and create installation art. Might have inherited the love of making spaces better from my father who was a master carpenter and restored old river boats along the Murray River.

4. The biggest risk you took?

Took off overseas when I was 20 for three months and came back two years later. Travelled all over Europe and South America and met and worked with amazing people. This interruption to my education and career trajectory was one of the best decisions I made and strengthened my ability to be okay with uncertainty – quite handy during these strange times.

5. Best advice you ever received?

Context is everything – assumptions lead to wrong conclusions.
