SPEED AND SCALE AT THE ALLIANCE SUMMIT

Thirty-three AmCham member company leaders and I just returned from the 2026 AmCham Alliance Summit to Washington DC and New York, and the message we heard across the week was clear: the global operating environment is changing faster than most Australian organisations are prepared for.

Across our meetings, we heard that the model that underpinned the last several decades of growth is shifting. Technology ambition remains high, but it is now constrained by physical realities such as energy, infrastructure, and supply chains. At the same time, geopolitics has moved from the background to the foreground, shaping markets, capital flows, and competitive outcomes in real time.

For Australian businesses, this creates both urgency and opportunity. The United States continues to view Australia as a trusted and highly valued ally, with particular relevance in critical minerals, next-generation defence capability, energy systems, AI infrastructure, and trusted capital. Importantly, many of these opportunities are durable and bipartisan. But the consistent message was that they will not be captured passively. Speed matters. Alignment with policy matters. Engagement matters.

We also heard that economic security is now central to the alliance. Governments are playing a far more active role in shaping markets, mobilising capital, and building resilient supply chains across critical sectors. For business leaders, this means commercial strategy can no longer sit apart from policy and geopolitics. The lines between them are blurring, and those who can operate effectively at this intersection will have a meaningful advantage.

This is where AmCham is sharpening its focus.

We are using the insights from this year’s Summit to shape an even more deliberate, forward-leaning agenda for our members. That includes convening targeted discussions in the areas where opportunity is most concentrated, connecting members with senior decision makers on both sides of the Pacific, and ensuring Australian business voices are heard as policy frameworks continue to evolve.

We will also deepen our work in a small number of priority domains, including critical minerals, advanced technology, defence, energy, and trusted capital, where Australia has clear strategic relevance and where the opportunity for members to engage is strongest.

At the same time, we are building more structured pathways for engagement. This means expanding our offerings beyond individual events to more sustained dialogue, smaller, more focused roundtables, and practical initiatives that help members translate insight into action.

Put simply, our goal is to ensure AmCham members are not just observing these shifts but helping to shape them.

The environment ahead will be more complex, more competitive, and more interconnected. But it will also reward those who move early, engage strategically, and align themselves with the direction of travel.

We see a clear role for AmCham in supporting that ambition, and we look forward to working closely with our members to turn these insights into tangible outcomes.
