Monday 16 July 2018

On July 4th, America celebrated its 242nd birthday. AmCham Australia celebrated as well, hosting events in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Hundreds of attendees gathered to reflect on 100 years of mateship, the history of the US-Australia relationship, and our joint ideals and values. We also looked ahead to the future where our combined trade and investment, intelligence sharing, and commitment to liberal democratic values will strengthen both countries.

In late June, I travelled to the US to participate in the SelectUSA conference, a most impressive showcase of investment opportunities. This annual conference, launched in 2014, assists investors of all sizes to identify the people, resources, and markets they need to expand their businesses and create jobs. It is remarkably effective: the first three SelectUSA summits have led to almost USD$93 billion in greenfield FDI. The panel I led brought into focus the urgent need to rebuild America’s infrastructure, possibly looking to the Australian asset recycling program as a model. Our delegation included 32 individuals representing companies from all over Australia, including many AmCham members such as IFM Investors, ALTIOS International, ATP Science, OurEco Clean, Washington Global Law Group, and Western Sydney Advisory, and many of them have told me that the contacts they made at SelectUSA leapfrogged their business plans way ahead. I encourage anyone looking to expand into the US to put this conference on the calendar for 10-12 June 2019 and contact me for more details.

And this week I am back in the US with a delegation of AmCham members for our annual Doorknock, together with other AmCham’s from the Asia-Pacific. We will be seeing top Trump Administration officials, leading members of Congress, policy experts, think tank intellectuals, and American business executives to highlight issues of importance to AmCham members throughout the Asia Pacific, including free and fair trade. We will also enjoy the hospitality of the Australian ambassador, the Asia Society, and the White House Historical Association. It is a highlight of the year for those involved in policy, and I encourage you to follow our progress on social media. Click here to download the 2018 APCAC Policy Report .

Next month, AmCham will be headed to Papua New Guinea for a pre-APEC business familiarisation tour. American company executives will join me and the US Ambassador to PNG for visits with senior government officials and leading businesses. There is still time to join our groupplease click here.

And looking ahead, AmCham’s
national event and trade delegation programmes include discussions around the economy, energy, artificial intelligence, retail and literally dozens of other topics. Especially timely, we will be hearing from state and federal leaders as part of our Meet the Minister Series in NSW, the ACT and WA. AmCham is constantly striving to bring your companies visibility, access to information and growth opportunities.

At the end of the year, we will be bringing you an opportunity to showcase your company’s best practices on
Diversity and Inclusion. This conference will be a chance not only to highlight what AmCham companies have achieved in the US and Australia, but also to learn from others across the country and around the world. Please contact me if you would like to participate.

Thank you for your ongoing support, and I look forward to seeing you at one of our events soon,

April Palmerlee, Chief Executive Officer

Global Talent Scheme (GTS)

We are pleased to offer AmCham members an opportunity to participate in and contribute to the Australian Government's pilot Global Talent Scheme (GTS). Launched on 1 July 2018, as part of the Government's Innovation agenda, the scheme aims to help attract global talent to Australia by providing a facilitated immigration pathway under a established business and start-up stream. AmCham member Fragomen is part of the Industry Advisory Group which has been supporting the Department of Home Affairs to design and implement the pilot scheme.

AmCham members who may be considering participating in the pilot phase of the scheme are encouraged to provide feedback and assist the Industry Advisory Group by providing details of where existing visa programs are unable to effectively facilitate their highly skilled labour mobility needs. Members can provide this feedback to ensure that their views are represented in shaping the Government's policy.

Fragomen is happy to receive feedback directly through the following contacts:
