A few weeks ago in Sydney, we held our first big dinner in Sydney under my leadership, with Australian Ambassador to the US Joe Hockey speaking to the packed Lighthouse Gallery at the Australian National Maritime Museum. He spent some time explaining how he has come to understand the United States and to seek opportunities for Australia there, and I’d like to quote a section of his speech:

“Too many of us in Australia fly to Los Angeles or San Francisco or New York or occasionally visit Washington and say, “We have been to America, we understand America.” But you don’t. Because all the American states are very different to each other. And therefore, if we don’t work really hard to understand the values and aspirations of the everyday American, then we will never understand the country.”

Besides the Gala dinner, we also had several other great events around the country last month: in Perth, Maureen Doughtery spoke to AmCham members and their guests about Boeing’s presence in Australia (second only to their American presence); their role in the changing face of transportation; and their vision for the future. In Melbourne, we heard from Jeanne Johns, the CEO of Incitec Pivot, the Austrailan company that is the largest supplier of fertilisers in Australia; the largest supplier of explosives products and services in North America; and the second largest supplier of explosives products and services in the world. In Adelaide, a panel discussed trade and exports to grow the SA economy; in Brisbane, a group of experts discussed energy for the future; and in Canberra, the Defence Committee met with newly appointed Minister for Defence Industry, Steve Ciobo.

Looking ahead, we have many exciting opportunities for members and their guests. I’m looking forward to our trade mission to Los Angeles and Houston to look at the commercial opportunities in space. We will visit the Johnson Space Centre including Boeing's facilities in Houston as well as attend the SpaceCom conference which features a wide range of activities including key note speakers, panel sessions, workshops, networking events, an exhibit hall showcasing cutting-edge technology, and an Entrepreneur Summit for startups. We will then travel to Los Angeles where we will visit the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Northrop Grumman Space Park, and the Boeing Satellite Development Center in El Segundo - the largest satellite factory in the world. This is an amazing opportunity to spend a week with a former NASA astronaut and see right inside the American space sector. Click here for more information.

We are also offering a fully escorted delegation to OSEA2018, Asia’s largest Oil & Gas industry event in November 2018 at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore. First launched in 1976, OSEA has since grown to be the largest and most established oil & gas industry event in Asia. OSEA has been delivering content that is most sought after by trade professionals and continues to remain relevant by being acutely aware of the industry’s trends and needs. Click here for more information.

We also are thrilled to have events with several high-profile speakers, such as Santos MD Kevin Gallagher; Shadow Treasurer Chris Bowen; a mid-term election panel featuring Tom Switzer and Len Harlan; Suncorp CEO Michael Cameron; a panel on the tourism industry in Queensland with Virgin Australia, Brisbane Airport Corporation, Queensland Government and local experts: and Westpac Consumer Bank CEO George Frazis.

I’m also pleased to include in this month’s newsletter a round up of the AmCham committees who are working hard behind the scenes to make sure AmCham is represented when policies are being considered, new laws tabled, and exciting opportunities floated. If you would like to nominate someone to join a committee, please contact Amie O’Mahony.

In honour of the 75th Anniversary of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt’s historic visit to Canberra to open the U.S. Embassy, Members of the American Chamber of Commerce have a one-time opportunity to contribute toward a bronze bust of the First Lady to be installed at the U.S. Embassy in Australia.

The bust will serve as a perpetual reminder of the tremendous courage and determination of Eleanor Roosevelt who dedicated her life to the cause of peace, human rights and equality; a reminder of the US-Australia mateship; and of our duty to work together to serve the cause of peace in the Asia-Pacific and around the world.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for your organisation to be tied to the United States and the legacy of this visionary. Sponsors will receive appropriate recognition. The unveiling ceremony in Canberra is planned for the end of the year.
