MESSAGE FROM AmCham CEO April Palmerlee

AmCham Australia is always looking at ways to benefit our members. A significant area of our work is with government and international trade organisations: sharing information, giving visibility to issues of concern to our members, exploring official positions to better understand how trade and development can be fostered, etc. Today I’d like to highlight some of the work we are doing in these areas, and I invite our members to participate where possible.

I recently attended the 2018 APCAC Business Summit, bringing together the 29 American Chambers of Commerce in the Asia-Pacific region in Malaysia. In the company of hundreds of other business and government leaders, I participated in sessions on American Business in the Asian Century. Topics focused heavily around technology, including cyber security, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IOT), fintech, e-health, and the digital economy. Talks about US trade policy also figured prominently, as well as infrastructure investment. Along with me representing AmCham Australia was my friend and colleague from the US Embassy Canberra, Deputy Chief of Mission Mike Heath. There were also many American companies who are involved in AmChams throughout the Asia-Pacific, such as Bechtel, Caterpillar, Cisco Systems, Coca Cola, Dell, Ernst & Young , ExxonMobil, FedEx, GE, Google, Honeywell, IBM, Johnson & Johnson, JPMorgan, Microsoft, PwC, and Visa. And a special mention to Kristen Foster from eBay Australia who moderated an excellent discussion on Asian Integration. We will be continuing these cross-border discussions throughout the year at our events and committee meetings. I encourage you to let me know if you would like to participate in next year's APCAC conference as a speaker, sponsor, or delegate.

Just before going to Kuala Lumpur, I took a delegation of AmCham committee members on the first of this year's doorknocks to Canberra. Along with representatives from the US Embassy, including Chargé d'Affaires a.i. Jim Carouso, we met with ministers, MPs, Senators, staffers, relevant departments, US embassy leadership, and local business. Aidan Tudehope from Macquarie Government hosted a very special reception that was attended by many Canberra-based members. We will do another doorknock in September; if you’d like to be involved, now is the time to join a committee and start learning about and contributing to the issues we will discuss. Email us to request more information.

I will also lead a delegation to Washington DC in July where we will meet with Congressional leaders, Trump administration officials, policy experts and the Australian Ambassador. Registration information is available here. In June, I will be speaking at the SelectUSA Conference , a large gathering in Washington, DC, that brings together all 50 states with investment specialists who can explain the benefits available for Australian businesses looking to invest in their states. This is a great opportunity for any AmCham companies who want to explore the options; see which states have the most favourable ecosystems for your business, who is willing to work with you on tax incentives, where the best schools are for your employees' children, etc. Please email my office if you would like to attend.

Later this year I will be taking a delegation to Papua New Guinea to explore business opportunities, ahead of APEC. We are also undertaking missions to the US related to business opportunities in space and the retail sector in the US and the gas industry in Spain. Click here to see our upcoming trade missions and register your interest. And if you prefer to stay domestic, all of our states are organising the AmCham Biz Bus in June: a day exploring business opportunities in each state. Click here to join us on a tour of cutting-edge businesses in SydneyBrisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and/or Adelaide

As always, my door is open, my email inbox available, and my phone line ready for any members who would like to connect. We are here to serve your interests, so please be sure to let us know if there are areas you would like us to cover that we aren't, speakers you want to hear from, or introductions that we can make.

Thank you for your support,
