Monday 21 May 2018

Dear Janita,

Last week was
National Infrastructure Week in the US: seven days of events, media coverage, education, and advocacy to examine infrastructure as a critical issue impacting America's economy, society, security and future. With hashtag #TimeToBuild, hundreds of organisations and thousands of leaders are looking at how to rebuild America’s infrastructure. And, part of that process involves a close look at how Australia recycles assets: governments lease existing infrastructure to private companies and use the income to build new infrastructure. President Trump has recognised the impact America’s crumbling infrastructure is having on productivity and has been working -– with limited success so far -- to pass a bill that would kick start a great rebuilding project in the US. In Australia and Canada, this rebuilding is done through PPPs (public-private partnerships). In America, PPPs have traditionally formed a smaller portion of the solution because of the availability and prevalence of other cost-effective funding models. However, given the size of the task, and the pressure on government infrastructure budgets, now is the time to look at what has happened in Australia and how it might form a larger piece of the puzzle.

Infrastructure will be the topic of my SelectUSA panel in Washington next month. Together with Mike Baird, Chief Customer Officer of NAB; Jose Manuel Entrecanales, Chairman & CEO, Acciona; and Jack Fusco, President and CEO, Cheniere, I will discuss how America can rebuild its infrastructure with know-how and investment from Australia. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross, Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta, Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin, multiple governors, university presidents, and business leaders will participate, and President Trump has been invited to give the keynote address. I urge you to join us if you can.

I will also lead an
infrastructure mission to the US later in the year. We will visit several states with pressing infrastructure needs and an interest in working with Australians to address the problems. Please click here if you would like more information on how to participate in the delegation.

And, speaking of infrastructure, a group of AmCham Governors visited Curtis Island earlier this week to view the ConocoPhillips-operated Australia Pacific LNG plant along with AmCham Board member, Wendy King, President of ConocoPhillips East, and AmCham Governor Warwick King, CEO of APLNG. The group visited one of the three LNG plants on the island – all of which were built simultaneously by AmCham member Bechtel.  GE Australia President Max York attended the visit and explained to the group that GE Australia has supplied the plant with equipment -- gas turbines, centrifugal compressors and auxiliary systems -- all of which GE engineers service.

AmCham also welcomes two new directors to our board:

In honour of the 75th Anniversary of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt’s historic visit to Canberra to open the U.S. Embassy, Members of the American Chamber of Commerce have a one-time opportunity to contribute toward a bronze bust of the First Lady to be installed at the U.S. Embassy in Australia.

The bust will serve as a perpetual reminder of the tremendous courage and determination of Eleanor Roosevelt who dedicated her life to the cause of peace, human rights and equality; a reminder of the US-Australia mateship; and of our duty to work together to serve the cause of peace in the Asia-Pacific and around the world.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for your organisation to be tied to the United States and the legacy of this visionary. Sponsors will receive appropriate recognition. The unveiling ceremony in Canberra is planned for the end of the year.
